Wienerberger AG is the world’s largest producer of clay blocks and bricks. The Austrian company also makes concrete pavestone, building façades, pipes, and roof tiles.
Wienerberger’s 2023 annual report takes the form of a website, making wide use of video to tell its story. The site opens on a full-frame video composed of a series of cut-scenes. These quickly show the viewer the products they make and how they are used. It’s a good mix of shots and sets the tone for the videos to follow.
This is followed by a ‘casual’ interview with the CEO on the rooftop of a building in the city. It’s casual in that, while highly structured and rehearsed, it comes across as an informal, 4-minute briefing directly from the CEO to the viewer. The briefing touches on key points that the review will later expand on. The video intercuts between the CEO explaining how 2023 went and further views of the company’s factories, linking it nicely to the opening montage.
Additional videos follow and many of these are in a vertical format, making it easier to view on a phone. It’s curious that the report contains a mix of horizontal and vertical-format videos. It can feel as if the designers couldn’t decide on which to commit to and lessens the impact of the site’s design. Aside from this quibble, the videos themselves are well-shot and give a viewer a thorough idea of how the company performed and how widely it operates, as it takes in stakeholders and multiple locations.
