Ersol Solar Energy AG was a solar wafer and solar sell manufacturer. Their untitled 2007 report is comprised of two parts (the annual and financial reports) joined together by a folded cover who use is explained by way of a diagram. It has the effect of slowing down the reading experience but perhaps this was intentional, as witness the use of fold-outs and an unusual photo treatment.

An unusual device to slow the reader’s experience is a paste-in used as the form of the CEO’s letter.

It makes the reader pause on this double-page spread to open the pasted-in letter and thereby sets the pace for the subsequent twelve pages where fold-outs are made use of to maintain a slow, steady progression through the report.

Content is included on both sides of each foldout. This physical action of opening the fold-out is a subtle way of forcing the eye to linger on specific pages, where the company talks about its business.

These pages then continue to encouraging lingering as each photograph is overlaid with an illustration coated in a UV lacquer, creating a tactile experience.

The remainder of the report makes no further use of devices intended to ensure a slow reading of the content. Plenty of negative space is used to create an easy to read report. This negative space is made good use of in certain instances, where unfamiliar terminology is explained, or summaries provided – all accomplished in small-point, lightweight blue text that does an excellent job of not overwhelming the reader.
