Rome University of Fine Arts (RUFA) makes excellent annual reports and their 2022 report honours this tradition, commissioning the same design studio who created the university’s outstanding 2018 report (Intorno Design).
Much could be said about the bilingual, mostly-monochrome design, its well-judged splashes of colour, use of type, illustration, and the design of the page grids. What is most useful to focus on however is the attention to detail. In an age that valorises minimalism, this report is proudly maximalist (even though it’s mostly black and white).
This attention to detail is visible on every page. Even something as simple as a student portrait is presented not as a single image but as four tiny 360-degree images.
When it comes to infographics is where the report really shines. Each university department is allocated its own unique system of infographics. Each is detailed and packed with information. Although occupying a single page per department, these infographics pages are packed with data but, crucially, the page never feels overstuffed—the highest compliment that can be paid for infographic design. This is a report worth poring over for many reasons, but mainly for a rewarding study of good design.
