“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” – Leonardo Da Vinci

This is the striking preamble to the Hanseatic Bank annual report 2017. The less-is-more concept has woven its way – quite dauntlessly – through the pages of this report. The motto of the bank ‘Einfach machen’ (Making it simple) is seen in all elements of the report – the pleasant colour palette of coral pink and plum, the minimal illustrations and the use of language, to name a few.

The structure of the report is easy to understand and navigate, with eye-catching chapter separators giving clear direction to the reader. The company has chosen to journey through time – from the age of Greek philosophers to the Renaissance, all the way to the present, drawing lessons on simplicity along the way.

The illustrations are the work of Stephanie Wunderlich, a renowned German illustrator. At first glance, they appear quite disproportionate when compared with the standard human figure, but her work is uncomplicated and gets the point across effectively.

Headings and titles are large and bold, while overall, text has been composed neatly throughout the report, making for easy reading. There is a mix of formal and informal language, probably to cater to their target audience and also appear more approachable. The style of writing also generates a certain sense of excitement at the idea of how successful one can be by turning the complex to simple.

Notable numbers and statistics have been creatively presented through the use of oversized and well-placed numbers. In addition, helpful links to relevant external sites are provided throughout the report.

A collection of quotes have also been scattered throughout the pages, giving the reader some food for thought while perusing the report.

An interview with Dr. Michael Hartschen, Simplicity Coach, is a sure bonus for the reader, offering helpful advice to achieve simplicity both in work and life.

Apart from the text-heavy financial information at the end, this report is certainly a visual treat and an easy read – a model of simplicity.
